I originally tried to use curves but their tilt values made it a pain to place correctly, so I ended up using simple planes with a subdivision surface modifier. One area that was surprisingly easier to create without using curves was the fancy bows on the chest and shoes. Since I’m not aiming for Oculus Quest compatibility though, I wasn’t too worried about the extra polygons. It’s a bit of a higher-poly technique, and if I wanted a more optimized method I would need to create a simple cylinder mesh and paint a texture that gives the illusion of real braids. They turned out really nice and were simple to position using curves.

It’s made me a lot more confident in creating hair, which was always something I dreaded having to do. Since creating my new 3.0 base my goal has been to create a new hairstyle for every model, instead of reusing them like I used to on the Kyu models. Not all pieces of the outfit benefit from this technique since many are skintight, but it worked wonders in creating the cloak, the skirt folds, and the flopped over santa hat. After all modifiers are applied I can then go back and remove any edge loops that are unnecessary.

Short cloth simulation using a subdivision surface modifier.Ĭloth modifiers tend to give jagged results even with lots of polygons, so what I found best was to apply a subdivision surface modifier both before and after the cloth modifier.
